Kraven the Hunter It’s Sony Pictures’ worst film since current CEO Tony Vinciquerra took over in 2017, he has admitted.
The Sony Spider-Man Universe movie stars Kick Ass and Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular villain, a skilled hunter who sets his sights on Spider-Man after conquering all other prey in the animal kingdom.
Kraven bombed at the box office Taking in $11 million from 3,211 theaters in its opening weekend. That figure was enough to set an unintended record: the worst opening ever for a Sony Spider-Man Universe movie. The R-rated action movie went into similar disaster Madame WebIt brought in just $15.3 million in its opening weekend earlier this year, as well as all of the Venom movies and 2022. Morbius ($39 million). Kraven’s current worldwide box office total of $43,877,089 is particularly impressive given that the film cost $110 million to produce. When you add in the marketing expense, Kraven is making a huge loss.
In an interview LA TimesSony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra described Kraven the Hunter as “probably the worst production we’ve had in seven and a half years” since taking over, before expressing his surprise at the film’s box office disappointment. : “So that didn’t turn out very well, which I still don’t understand, because the movie is not a bad movie.”
In the same interview, Vinciquerra talked about the appearance of Madame Web, and blamed the box office on the press. In fact, Vinciquerra suggested to the press that Sony was to blame for all the failures of the Spider-Man Universe, indicating that the success of the Venom trilogy was to come. although this apparent campaign of critics.
“Madame Web did little in the theaters because the press had just crucified it,” Vinciquerra claimed. “It wasn’t a bad movie, and it did great on Netflix. For some reason, the press decided they didn’t want to make these movies with Kraven and Madame Web, and the critics destroyed them. They also did it with Venom, but the audience loved Venom and Venom was a huge hit. They’re not terrible movies. The critics in the press just destroyed it, for some reason.’
Sony’s Spider-Man universe officially includes six films, with IGN’s review scores listed here: poison (4/10), Venom: Let it be carnage (7/10), Morbius (5/10), Madame Web (5/10), Venom: The Last Dance (4/10), and Kraven the Hunter (3/10).
Now the question is: Is Kraven the final nail in the coffin for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, a universe that notably does not feature Spider-Man? A top talent agent said earlier this month return that Sony “developed what it wanted to develop for now” and was instead focusing on the next actual Spider-Man movie under Marvel Studios.Star Tom Holland confirms filming will begin in 2025. In comparison, Spider-Man: No Way Home It earned $587.2 million at the weekend box office.
Vinciquerra admitted that Sony needs to “rethink” its Spider-Man universe strategy, but blamed the need to do so on the press, rather than the shortcomings of Sony Pictures itself. “I think we need to rethink because the snake has bitten him,” he said. “If we take out another one, it will be destroyed, no matter how good or bad it is.”
Overall, Vinciquerra emphasized, Sony Pictures’ film efforts have been “very successful” under his tenure as CEO, exceeding the company’s budgets every year since 2017. “It was a good journey, and the film studio was a big part of it.” he said
At least Sony has the aforementioned Spider-Man 4 to look forward to. It will arrive on July 24, 2026 As a continuation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy starring Holland. It will also introduce Miles Morales into the MCU, Something Holland is personally invested in.
