The best Xbox games of 2024 that aren’t talked about enough

With so many games launching on Xbox this year, it can be hard to keep up with it all! There have been some monsters this year stealing all your time, and that’s not helping matters. So, the TrueAchievements team of writer Tom, features editor Heidi, and editor-in-chief Kes put their heads together to find some games that are often missing from 2024 catalogs.

In this roundup, we wanted to highlight some great Xbox games you may have missed this year. Some got caught up in the release cycle of other games, found communities on other platforms before Xbox, or simply weren’t appreciated. So, here are some of our favorite games that we’re all missing on Xbox in 2024!

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden was a victim of circumstance earlier this year, arriving just over a week after Persona 3 Reload stole the show on Xbox Game Pass; And while there’s been a lot of talk surrounding the just-released Suicide Squad and the recent Skull and Bones open beta. Let’s not forget that Baldur’s Gate 3 was released in December 2023. The dense and long RPG was still at the top of player chatter on Xbox during February 2024.

Unfortunately, this means that Banishers – despite being an exceptional action RPG – could have easily been missed by many players. Set in the year 1695, ghost-hunting Panachera Antea Duarte and Red McRith travel to New Eden to investigate a disturbing haunting, but it leads to Antea becoming a ghost herself. We control Red, who uses conventional weapons and banishing abilities to eliminate enemies. Meanwhile, Antea supports Red by combining her amazing spectral powers with his skill tree.

During our time investigating New Eden’s difficulties, we’re given a strange, wonderful, semi-open world to discover. It’s full of secrets to find and enemies to kill, but being a game developed by Don’t Nod, it’s unsurprising that the story makes this game a must-play. Throughout the world, you can solve further hauntings as side quests, each of which ultimately ends with you choosing a person or spirit to “exorcise,” but not every decision is made in black and white, leading to sometimes painful decisions.

Although there are many endings to find, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is best experienced by just playing blind so you can experience the emotional rollercoaster you are forced to ride. Definitely check this out if you haven’t already!

massacre! This is an action-packed ride that I desperately wanted to play this year but couldn’t find the time. It has everything I need in a short game; Evil unicorns, a talking hoverboard, a cat with crazy skills, and some horrific toys that, frankly, I’d probably be guilty of buying. I also played it at WASD in London last year (when WASD was still around), and I loved the soundtrack mixed with the chaos on screen and it was beautiful in every way.

Gori: Cuddly Carnage is an action-adventure game set in a world where evil toys have destroyed humanity – think Skynet dropping T-series robots for dolls, transforming boxes, and the like and calling it a cool army. Instead of John Connor saving the day, we have Gorey, a space cat riding on a sentient hoverboard named Frank and powered by an AI companion named CH1-P. It’s all weirdly cool!

You have one job: traverse neon-lit levels like Gori, performing combos to rip cute toys to shreds as you collect points and make your way to boss battles. Honestly, Juri: Lovely Carnage is my holiday reward!

The very short time I’ve spent with Phasmophobia so far has given me plenty of opportunities to admire the interiors of people’s closets. News Editor Sean and I dove in when it launched on Xbox in October (it already has an audience on PC!) and had a lot of fun, spending most of the evening laughing as we nervously peeked into different hiding places to explore for whatever terrifying creature it was. For the uninitiated, Phasmophobia is a multiplayer first-person horror game for up to four players. It puts you in the shoes of paranormal investigators. Your mission is simple: head to a haunted location, search for clues, and discover what kind of ghost is causing the ghosts. There are over 20 types of ghosts to find, and you need to use different pieces of equipment to find clues across the levels before correctly identifying the ghost in question to successfully win the match.

However, you are always working against the clock, as your sanity meter always drops during the investigation, and once it drops too low, the offending ghost can appear. Things can easily turn into absolute carnage, with the horror escalating even further once your friends start getting killed. It’s a lot of fun to play with friends – we’re still trying to get Heidi to play, but I don’t think it’s a battle we can win. Go play Phasmophobia!

I’m almost in disbelief at how good Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is, but I’m not surprised at how bad Ubisoft thinks it’s done. This weird, cel-shaded, over-the-top art style was at the forefront of the first few trailers in all the worst ways. I thought it looked terrible too! I don’t think it helps that a learning assignment reflects that bad first impression with equally awkward dialogue.

Then something magical happens. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown opens up its broken time palace and begins feeding you, little by little, some of the most fun Metroidvania-style platforming of 2024. The bright art style is much less annoying when it enriches wonderfully designed levels filled with gorgeous architecture stuck in time loops. There’s something reminiscent of an 80s adventure film that keeps you hooked about its art direction when the game is in full flow.

Ubisoft Montpellier supports this with solid foundational exploration and platforming mechanics along with some great map-marking tools to help you stay aware of its many secrets. Great combat rounds out of the package. If you like Stardew Valley, you’ll love Roots of Pacha, whether it’s the beautiful pixel art style or the farm life you seek. You can do all the things you’d expect: fishing, mining, raising animals, heading to festivals, making friends, and finding partners; But everything looks new and fresh thanks to the development of the Stone Age.

Community is hugely important in Roots of Pacha: your clan develops by coming up with and testing new ideas, leading to the discovery of useful things like irrigation. They gradually domesticate crops from their wild forms, and keep animals such as cave lions and mammoths. It’s great fun and fans of life simulation and farming games should definitely check it out!
