What happens when you take the old school shooter gameplay you find in old Quake, Doom, or Marathon games and add some anime girls to it? You can get the castle. What happens when you do it again? You get its sequel, Beyond the castle. Created by a solo developer who values retro FPS games and waifus in equal measure, Beyond Citadel has now arrived on Steam two years after its highly-rated predecessor. Judging by early Steam user scores, it seems to be headed in that direction as well.
While many of the most popular Anime games There are suggestive narrative adventures or sprawling gacha RPGs, Beyond the castle various. The first game in the series was poetically called a “goonershooter” by many, and I’m afraid to say that’s probably the most accurate description of the genre out there for it and its new sequel. sigh.
Beyond Citadel is aesthetically similar to the first game and continues the story. The Citadel is one of humanity’s last strongholds against an evil force known as Apocalypse, but in Beyond Citadel, it has fallen, and it is up to you to head to the bottom of the Citadel to investigate a strange signal and recover it.
There is a wide variety of weapons to find, from your classic assault rifles to futuristic energy weapons. There’s an emphasis here on making gunplay feel as realistic as possible in a fast-paced, retro shooter like this – your weapon will deteriorate over time, there are completely different recoils and spray patterns, and your guns can jam at any moment, too.
As you journey through the game as anime hero The Martyr, you’ll encounter allies who will aid you in your battle against Apocalypse – and coincidentally, they’re also anime girls. It’s really a mix of aesthetics and worlds colliding, this game, but just like its predecessor, Beyond Citadel is getting a lot of positive reviews on Steam.
The first game received a “very positive” rating of 94%, but so far it’s outperformed by the sequel, with Beyond Citadel earning a whopping 98% rating based on an early wave of 140 reviews. This is something that solo developer “doekuramori” can be proud of.
If you want to learn more about Beyond Citadel, try out the Steam demo, or grab it while it’s at an introductory 10% discount, head over to its store page here. Just a warning, dear reader, if you’re going to be watching any gameplay videos, researching the game on social media, or heading to any of the Citadel forums, you probably don’t want to do so in public…
