What is the announced release date? Obsidian Entertainment is back with another world to explore and an exciting adventure to create your own. Featuring a story separate from Pillars of Eternity but set in the same universe, Avowed begins when the Emperor of Aedyr commands you to travel to the Living Lands on their behalf.

He is replaced by a woman who explains the real problem, which is the chaos caused by the world’s population. Finally, another woman tells you not to listen to the first two people. Instead, it says you need to be open to the wonders and secrets of the world to become a protector of the living Earth.

We got our first proper look at Avowed at Gamescom 2024 through an extended hands-on Preview. Being a stranger to the Living Lands, you have been sent by your Emperor to investigate the spread of a plague across the land. But the plague is not the only obstacle you will face, as you will be met with hostility.

The trailer for Avowed gives a brief backstory for Kai, an NPC. We are shown footage of some of the creatures of the living lands and what the plague did to them. Clips of melee combat and magical use are shown while a voiceover reveals how much power we possess and that the people of the Living Lands, who we are trying to protect, are afraid of us.

Our magical powers appear to be elemental, as the player character is seen blasting attackers, throwing an explosive fireball, freezing enemies, and using other magical attacks. Meanwhile, you can use both magic and weapons simultaneously. And while the trailer poses a question, the game’s trailer also poses a question, as Kai asks, “Now that you have all this power, what are you going to do with it?”

Upon our arrival, we are immediately attacked by menacing locals who fear the power we hold and seem to take their frustrations about the Emperor out on us, the Emperor’s representative. While the Emperor asks us to find the root of the Dream Blight and eliminate it, another character named Lodwin claims that the Emperor is wrong. She says the scourge of dreams is merely a symptom of a broader problem and asks you instead to “tame the chaos” so those who remain can rebuild.

However, the trailer also reveals a third party, Giatta, who claims that both the Emperor and Ludwin are deceiving you. It only asks that you open yourself to the secrets of the world and care for the living lands as their protector. While you determine the basis of the story, it seems like how you play it is up to you.

Declared setting

The film takes place on the Living Lands, an island located northwest of Eora. The stunning location is full of colour, plant life and fantastical creatures – some of which are hostile, while others may be used to your advantage. We know that the Living Lands are filled with different fantasy species, such as dwarves and Ōmawa, some of which can become your companions as you explore the island.

The Living Lands are named so thanks to two features: the fertile soil on which plants grow and the rich diversity of species that live together on this land. However, the events of Avaved threaten all of this, and it’s clearly up to you to decide its fate.
