The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has just updated its DisplayHDR and ClearMR certifications, expanding the HDR and motion blur standards to account for advances in display technology. visa It says its members will unveil new products that comply with these new certification levels, allowing users who purchase displays with 480Hz refresh rates and HDR capabilities to ensure they’re getting what they pay for.
“DisplayHDR True Black is one of VESA’s most successful standards and has helped unify the display ecosystem behind a common set of performance metrics to optimize emission display technologies and enable products that deliver a visually stunning experience for home theater and gaming enthusiasts,” says an Intel representative. To VESA Roland Wooster. “The ability of OLED displays to achieve a peak brightness of 1,000nits for HDR content represents a major advancement in technology and a major crossover point in content creation applications.”
He also added: “Our ClearMR standard has seen a faster increase in adoption since its introduction two and a half years ago than DisplayHDR over the same period, demonstrating the program’s success in helping consumers compare motion blur among certified products using a true quality measure of motion performance.” The initial launch of ClearMR, VESA only added new levels incrementally with differences large enough to ensure they were meaningfully and noticeably visible to highly attuned gamers.
The VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 benchmark shows just how bright OLED displays are, which can now reach a peak brightness of 1,000 nits for HDR content. On the other hand, VESA is launching three new levels of the Clear Motion Ratio scale – ClearMR 15000, ClearMR 18000, and ClearMR 21000. The higher number represents a greater proportion of clear pixels, with ClearMR 21000 representing 195 times more clear pixels than blurry pixels. .
Expect Gigabyte, MSI, LGand Samsung, among others, to announce which displays will benefit from these new certification levels CES 2025. LG announces that it will introduce a bendable 5K2K OLED gaming monitor. Therefore, we expect several new OLED gaming monitors with ultra-high refresh rates to arrive in the coming weeks starting on January 8.
