Tonight is the Game Awards, which means another year of Joseph Fares appearing on stage to say “Fuck” in a performance he thinks is rude. Thankfully this year he had a game to show off: a split novel, a new co-op action adventure. It’s about two authors, one who writes science fiction and one who writes fantasy, who have to step inside and live in their own novels.
Split Fiction takes place in the near future where a technology company can transform people’s stories into a virtual world. Submit your opinion about Generative AI here. In this example, the main characters Mio and Zoe are drawn into their own stories, but they are strangers, and must survive in those dangerous and crumbling worlds as they get to know each other.
The stages seem to be alternating back and forth between sci-fi, with robots and explosions and cybercop, and a trad fantasy world of dragons. Do both worlds seem a bit cliche? But that may have been intentional, since these worlds, in fiction, are created by newbies. Maybe by the end of the game you’ll grow and learn and get better at world building.
Yeah, I’m giving him too much credit. The split novel is from Hazelight, like other co-op games developers Way out And It takes two. Takes Two I played it and it’s great because it changes the setting and mechanics in a fresh and interesting way. But it’s not particularly coherent narratively, and there’s very little connection between the plot or the emotional beat and the mecha-insects you lead killing wasps for some reason.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to the split novel. It has an early release date: March 6, 2025.
