the I survived The book series, written by Lauren Tarshis, is a collection that takes important historical moments and brings them to life through the eyes of imaginative children. There are 23 books in total, and more than 20 million copies have been sold worldwide.
I’m a big advocate of teaching history, and I believe we can learn a lot about how we will behave in the future based on how we have already behaved in the past. I’m passionate about passing this education on to the younger generation as well, and what better way to do that than by giving them characters who can bring the past to life through their imagination?
the I survived The series does just that, and Tarshis does a great job of creating characters that young readers can easily relate to. Imagining yourself in someone else’s shoes is the best way to learn through their story, and that’s what I survived Series allows you to do. Here are ten of the best, although the entire series is worth watching.
The Black Death is the name given to the outbreak of bubonic plague that occurred across Europe during the Middle Ages, from 1346 to 1353, and claimed the lives of millions of people.
Although Tarsis doesn’t go into a lot of detail surrounding the more gruesome and terrifying aspects of the plague (for good reason; it wouldn’t do anyone any good to have young readers experience nightmares through her work), I survived the Black Death He did an excellent job of explaining how widespread the pandemic really is, and how quickly it can take root in a community.
On June 6, 1944, British and American forces landed on the coast of Normandy in an attempt to reclaim France from the German occupiers. I survived the D-Day battle It focuses on a French boy named Paul whose city has been occupied for years. His best Jewish friend is missing, and his family is on the verge of starvation when Allied forces begin to reclaim the land.
Although this, like all I survived bookslargely fictional, does a fantastic job of bringing that horrifying moment in history to life. With Paul trying to help a paratrooper stuck in a tree near his home, it’s easy to get immersed in the story and learn without even realizing it.
I survived the American Revolution The film is about an 11-year-old boy named Nathaniel, who escapes his abusive uncle’s home and enters a world of battles and bloodshed in the midst of the Revolutionary War. With little knowledge of what is going on between the British and the Americans, Nathaniel ends up in New York on the eve of the Battle of Brooklyn.
Although children in America grow up learning about the American Revolution in schools, it is not taught in detail outside the United States. As a British person with American ties, I Survived the American Revolution was a huge educational book for me, while also being entertaining enough that it didn’t feel like I was reading a textbook.
In the same way that Smokey Bear delivers his lesson on fire protection around forests, the memory of “Night of the Grizzlies” in 1967 teaches us how hikers in national parks should behave. In 1967, grizzly bears attacked and killed two strangers camping in Glacier National Park.
I survived a Grizzlies attack It focuses on fictional 11-year-old Melody, who finds herself in Glacier National Park on that fateful night. She comes face to face with a hungry grizzly and must find a way to survive.
Between October 8 and 10, 1871, a catastrophic, merciless fire swept through 3.3 square miles of Chicago, killing more than 300 people and leaving more than 100,000 people without homes. It caused $222 million in damage, the equivalent of more than $5.7 billion today.
I survived the Great Chicago Fire The film follows Oscar Starling, who never wanted to move to Chicago in the first place but finds himself in the middle of hell on Earth when the entire city seems to be burning. There are subplots that are seamlessly intertwined with the main story, and the action never stops as Oscar and his friends fight to survive the fire.
Imagine the awe a child would have felt as he stepped aboard the “unsinkable” Titanic all those years ago, only to discover in a terrifying way that it was largely unsinkable. This is the situation that the fantasy star faces I survived the sinking of the TitanicGeorge and his younger sister Phoebe.
This batch of I survived The series was the first to be released in 2010, and while it is unlikely to provide new details about the disaster to anyone familiar with it, it is an eye-opening read for those who may be too young to truly appreciate the true extent of the disaster. A life-changing night in 1912.
I recommend the graphic novel version of this one because the illustrations are beautiful and really help with immersion.
Between July 1 and 12, 1916, a series of shark attacks occurred off the coast of New Jersey. Four people died and another was seriously injured, leaving beachgoers afraid to go into the ocean despite increasing numbers near the coast due to the heat wave and polio epidemic in the United States at the time. It is still unknown what type of shark was responsible for the attacks.
I have survived shark attacks “1916” is the book in the series that focuses on perhaps the least known event, so it will be shocking to anyone who reads it. Tarshis settled on the great white shark as the villain of the fictional novel, focusing on a boy named Chet who was on the coast at the time, witness to the terrifying events.
It’s hard to imagine anyone surviving the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, which buried at least four Roman towns and killed thousands in a single night. However, this is a hypothesis I survived the destruction of Pompeii. From all I survived Books, this is the furthest from the history of the event, but no less interesting or educational to read.
The focus is on Marcus and his family, whose father is a man of science rather than mythical creatures. When the ground beneath Pompeii begins to shake, the townspeople believe that the creature beneath the volcano is angry but will eventually go back to sleep. On the other hand, Marcus and his father think differently. The race begins to escape Pompeii before its burial.
The last two entries on this list are a little different from the others because they are summaries of true stories of events that occurred in recent history. The first is Nature attacks!Which shows stories of animals turning on humans and natural disasters, and is told using the stories of real children who survived frightening events.
in Nature attacks! You will be able to read true accounts of the following events:
To wrap up this list with an entry that proves the series isn’t always terribleg for reading, I survived true stories: brave creatures It focuses on animals that helped humans rather than attacked them or acted bravely in their own right. I’ve always loved stories of animals that prove their bravery, so this one is my favorite.
in Brave creaturesYou will learn about the touching true stories of the following animals:
