Following the success of last season, The Frozen Canvas, which featured some of the most dramatic and transformative changes, developer XD continues to build on its strong core.

As you explore the world during the new season, you will come across Arcana cards that you will have to uncover to receive their rewards. Doing so will present you with a challenge based on the face-up card, each one spreading a distinct effect on the battlefield. Complete enough trials and you’ll be able to explore the Tarot Path, a grid you’ll traverse using collected Arcana notes. You can collect multiple effects to boost your potential rewards as you fill the grid – but you’ll have to overcome all the associated challenges in one decisive battle to claim your reward.
Next is the Fate mechanic. This can be used to replace existing nodes on your Pactspirit tree, and is designed to make progression trees look more dynamic and flavorful, giving them new ways to complement your designs. They are divided into two types: Fates, which provide basic stat boosts, and Kismets, which include more unique and powerful effects. You can also unlock special Dual Kismets that combine multiple blessings into one node.
New check-in events during the season will give players a chance to unlock Legendary Battle Pactspirits, but Andre points out that even if you’re using lower-tier Pactspirits, the new Destiny nodes aren’t limited by rarity. You can now also equip three Battle Pact souls and three Drop Pact souls, meaning you no longer need to switch between them on the fly to get the benefits of both types.
Iris gains a new hero trait, Vigilant Breeze, which allows her to fuse with and control Spirit Magi directly. Along with the likes of Frost and Fire Magi, she can summon two new options. The Rock Magus is able to unleash incredible area damage with his storm attacks while creating shields. Erosion Magus launches powerful counterattacks as he takes hits and enemies wither and disintegrate. Iris can either sacrifice her spirit’s health for more power, or protect and heal her for more sustainable production.
Following the trend of last season, all previous champions will be available to everyone for free. This includes the former newcomer Selena From the Frozen Canvas, which means you can try it out if you decided not to buy it for real money last season. It’s an incredibly fun option with the ability to attack groups of enemies incredibly quickly, so I definitely recommend checking it out.
City Defense is a new wave-based co-op mode, where you have to survive floods of increasingly difficult enemies. You will have a limited number of team revivals to get through a total of fifteen waves. There are seven difficulty levels, and victory in each level grants you a set of rewards as well as access to the next level – beat them all and you’ll earn yourself a legendary battle spirit.
Last season’s Frozen Canvas mechanic was so popular that it has now been integrated into the core progression, though it has been simplified slightly since it will not be the primary focus for future seasons. However, it does have a tree associated with it, allowing you to boost your potential payouts just like Path of Exile’s Atlas’ passive tree – Andre says this will ensure the mode is “more fun and profitable” than before.
Season of Arcana also features new items, as well as some rebalanced items – perhaps the most notable of which is the iconic Lone Walker’s Boots getting a special upgrade to Legendary tier. Its effects now apply to nearby allies, meaning you can use it to boost your summons. A total of 13 active skills have been changed, and several hero attributes have been tweaked, meaning there are plenty of reasons to check out older characters. Anger Rehan can now apply his Attack and Speed to cooldown recovery for more frequent blasts, while Moto gets buffs to his minion-focused builds.
The method of calculating damage across the game has been reworked, which should allow builds focused on dealing high-damage single hits to reach greater values than previously implemented damage limits allowed. Steep Strike, an effect that triggers additional attacks, has been adjusted to be easier to understand. With new accounts, reaching 100% Critical Strike Chance will ensure it is always activated.
Shock designs have long been underperforming, so the associated equipment has been beefed up. Likewise, multi-hit effects have been enhanced, while survival mechanics such as dodging, deflecting, and energy shields now encourage synergy between various different types. XD has also made the combo and effects on enemy attacks clearer, while removing some seemingly unfair moves, to ensure you’re less likely to take unexpected damage.
Torchlight Infinite Season 7, Season of the Arcana, will launch on Thursday, January 9 at 6pm PT / 9pm EST (Friday, January 10 at 2am GMT / 3am CET). You can play the game for free on Steam.
