Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch has built a Death captcha Which requires you to eliminate three villains in Nightmare mode to prove that you are human. according to HackadayDesigned as a WebAssembly application, DOOM captcha is ideal for displaying graphics, video processing, and gaming directly on your browser.
However, since this is just a browser app and you’ll likely want to keep using your mouse to switch between windows, you’re limited to using the arrow keys to move and the space bar to fire your weapon (just like one of the keys our editors had to do back in the ’90s). Jumping to dodge and using the cursor to look around, unfortunately, are not allowed. You can use cheats such as IDKFA (200% all keys, weapons, ammo and armor) and IDDQD (God Mode), to increase the fun and your chance of survival.
By default, Captcha gives you 50 ammo, 0% armor, and 100% health to finish the required feat, which can be very difficult. One way we’ve discovered to prove your humanity is to step back and let the enemy come to you. Once you can see them, blast them with your weapon, which is very effective even from a distance. So, Captcha in DOOM will give you some nostalgic fun while proving that you’re a real person. However, it can also end up frustrating for non-gamers, especially since you need a certain level of hand-eye coordination to get the kills required to pass the CAPTCHA. On the other hand, this can also serve as a good gatekeeper, especially if you don’t want non-DOOM players to visit your page.
There is little to no chance of becoming addicted to captcha in DOOM, as you will automatically expire once you get the required three kills. It’s also unfortunate that it only uses one level, so you’re just repeating a captcha every time you access a page that uses it. Maybe it would have been better if it had been Rauch Use Stable Diffusion to build a unique level every time a captcha is loaded in DOOMbut then you might get distracted enough and get stuck playing captcha instead of doing real work.
On the other hand, we are also not sure if this will be an actual effective tool to get rid of robots and prove your humanity. After all, we’ve seen some researchers train AI software to play DOOM and they can even outperform the average FPS player. However, this may be more than enough to prevent a crawler from accessing your page, especially since it may not know how to respond when asked to “kill at least 3 monsters.”
