As with any team-based game with a faction system, you’ll need to mix and match your team composition to maximize your strategic options.

There’s another major addition we spotted in the gameplay video that’s worth highlighting: sliding. That’s right, the frenetic speed has been dialed up to 11 in Splitgate 2 where you’ll be able to slide across the ground at full speed.

While the key features described above are certainly a major part of the gameplay loop, it’s clear that Portal Mastery will still be the most important skill you’ll have to achieve. Although Sabrask’s smart wall is no less powerful than the gameplay video highlights, it can easily be circumvented with a well-placed portal – bullets can’t penetrate armor but portals can.

The portals themselves have been revamped, with 1047 opting to ditch the portal-destroying EMP bombs and dual keybinds required to open and close them (the latter can still be involved). Instead, the studio uses a new “automatic triple-gate” system. Now, you only need to press one key to open and close portals, while you can destroy enemy portals by overwriting them with your own portal. It’s very intuitive, and we were shocked at how well it worked.

During testing, we were able to try out two powerful new weapons: a powerful assault rifle called the Slipstream that can be separated into two akimbo SMGs, and a rocket launcher capable of firing its entire three-shot magazine at once using its alternate fire.

Power weapons have trade-offs, so they are not a requirement for an instant win. The Slipstream won’t let you use the utility while walking around with it, while the rocket launcher only comes with six rounds. Although the triple shot will guarantee a kill, you will only be able to add two to your balance before spending it. Fortunately, direct hits with a single missile will still kill, so you’ll have to keep your aim accurate if you want to maximize the launcher’s potential.

Besides the standard Team Deathmatch mode, we got to try Hotzone – a king-of-the-hill-adjacent mode with some unique quirks. In Hotzone, a second zone will always appear near the losing team in an attempt to keep the game competitive. Additionally, territory capture progress does not reset when control is flipped, meaning you can take a territory to 99%, only to lose it completely if the enemy team cleans house and captures it for the last 1%. As such, you will have to coordinate your pushes towards the goal.

Along with Splitgate 2, 1047 has released brand new companion apps. The app features cartoonish graphics and lore-based cards to collect, allowing you to immerse yourself in the game world before launch. You’ll also eventually be able to earn in-game rewards through the app.
