Just days after the release of the final batch of Secret Level Season 1 episodes, Tim Miller’s ode to the wide world of video games has gone from critically acclaimed to… It has been renewed for a second season by Amazon. Now, along with his supervising director, Dave Wilson, Miller sat down for an interview with Collider To discuss everything secret level, present and future.
One of the biggest takeaways from Miller and Wilson’s interview was that when Season 1 of Secret Level premiered on Amazon in 2021, it was expected to be 18 episodes instead of the 15 that viewers ended up with. Miller cites the number of things that can change from what a show looks like when it’s first released compared to what you’re like when you’re in the midst of making it along with potential drawbacks with certain ideas from a game’s IP and from a legal standpoint.
When asked directly, both Miller and Wilson stated that the missing episodes from Season 1 will not carry over to whatever season it turns into. However, the duo vaguely teased the concept of returning to a game from season one, suggesting possible connections and continuations between the episodes.
Wilson even went out on a limb talking about how he came up with the idea of putting two titles into one massive episode, a video game crossover event, specifically with Mr. President and Deadly deathBut gaming companies dropped it. Even with that said, you really get an idea of how creative the team is at Secret Level.
Season 2 could see a more retro approach, with both Miller and Wilson showing interest in OG titles like Centipede and Pong. Wilson discusses how creative they can be by comparing the game’s IP and simplicity to some of the larger A-list titles.
The duo offers a few insights into their approach with specific titles, like the Concorde episode from Season 1, noting that a third of Season 1’s episodes were created for games that haven’t been released to the public yet.
Miller and Wilson’s overall feeling about the future is somewhat optimistic. Capitalizing on the show’s success thus far is something in the back of their minds as to what creative avenues it opens up for potential bigger game titles. The duo teases the idea of not just looking at old classics in the gaming world, but perhaps even dabbling in sports games as one of their producers is a huge sportsman.
One thing Miller and Wilson seem keen on for Season 2 and the future in general is sticking to their yearly release calendar, and making sure the quality is always there, even if it means a longer wait for fans. Regardless, the sky is truly the limit for Miller and Wilson, but they have big shoes to fill now after the success of the first season and several cameos from Keanu Reeves and Kevin Hart, to name a few.
