Notch’s Minecraft 2 would avoid Microsoft’s “sh*tification” of the original

Minecraft Creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has announced that he wants to create another game, and it looks like it will be a spiritual sequel to the world’s biggest sandbox game. Pearson asked his online followers what kind of project they’d like to see next, and it already seems like a potential “Minecraft 2,” which would likely share many of the original game’s ideas, is what fans want most. Pearson even says that this virtual successor would avoid Microsoft “misleading” the original.

On Wednesday, January 1, 2025, Pearson asked his 3.6 million Twitter/X followers what his next game was. He describes the first option as a “traditional roguelike” mixed with a “tile-based first-person dungeon crawler” similar to NetHack and Eye of the Beholder. This game also “feels like Stardew Valley, but (with) more diagonal kicking of doors.” As for the second option, Pearson describes it as “the spiritual successor to Minecraft“, before placing both projects in the poll.

As of publication date, “Minecraft 2” has won 77.9% of the votes, with more than 235,000 people voting in favor of the game. Sandbox game Khalifa so far. In a lengthy response to someone out of the loop about his initial announcement, Pearson said he “basically announced Minecraft 2,” adding that he “would love to work on games again.”

As for what a potential spiritual Minecraft sequel could look like, Pearson adds that it “wouldn’t subtly infringe on the amazing work that the Mojang team is doing and that Microsoft is successfully implementing.”

Pearson immediately follows up his comment about Microsoft’s handling of Minecraft with a more positive statement, so it’s unclear exactly what part of its handling of the original Minecraft he wasn’t involved in.

“And I respect them for doing that. It’s their job. And they, from what I understand, let the studio do things their way, which seems very fair to me.”

Pearson also adds that simply making “Minecraft 2” would be “highly illegal,” and that its soul sequel would be “a new original game in the same genre as Minecraft and (called) something else.”

Pearson started making Minecraft in 2009, and it almost immediately turned into a multi-million dollar success story. By 2014, Persson sold his stake in his studio Mojang to Microsoft, with the Minecraft IP and Mojang purchasing for $2.5 billion. Since then, Mojang has continued to update Minecraft, and the game has sold over 300 million copies as of its 15th anniversary.
