The long darkness Developers have announced Hinterlands The Long Dark 2, another open-world wilderness survival game. Indeed, the title Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2 – a more embarrassing violation of naming conventions than any post-apocalyptic winter – is in early access in 2026, and will introduce urban environments with a “will to live” sanitation system and co. – Multiplayer. Here is the trailer.
And here’s some backstory, care The steam page just started.
Experience the security apocalypse in the northern industrial city of Harmont and its surrounding area. A year has passed since the aurora first appeared in the sky, making all technology obsolete, and survivors are beginning to emerge to face their new reality behind it. Surrounded by a majestic and rugged wilderness, they encounter the remnants of an isolated community who realize how the world has changed forever. How do you choose to survive?
If you scream at the mention of co-op, dress yourself up as a wolf skin and flee to the cave in the hills, it seems that single-player is still the heart of the game. But you’ll have a lot more company, as players must decide to join communities of NPC survivors. Co-op players, meanwhile, will be “supporting each other and combining your skills and efforts to create another day of survival in a hostile environment.” That said, I’m not sure if there are any special co-op mechanics. If my co-op dies, can I eat them and use their entrails as a mantle?
Then there are new urban areas. “Towns and cities present new opportunities and new threats to your survival, introducing a new approach to the established survival formula,” the Steam page explains. “Wildlife is dangerous, but sometimes the city is where the real danger lies.” I guess you’re not talking about a boy racing at a traffic light.
The new living permit system complicates the already difficult challenge of keeping yourself fed, watered, and unharmed. According to the Steam page, it “adds elements of psychological survival to the mix, introducing Resilience and sub-stats to well-established mechanics.” “Manage your doubts and fears and find comfort in the little things if you want to live.”
You may be wondering what this “black ice” thing is. One of the new hazards is radioactive material from a remote reactor complex. It is not clear how exactly it affects you, but you want to avoid it. Such as “aurora storms” and “severe weather events”.
There’s a new permalife system that “turns every death into a new adventure” that looks like a narrator-driven feature. The Steam page reads: “Gather new threats and fears for the survivor as you travel through the world and overcome various dangers. Confront your fears, overcome their weaknesses, and strengthen your survivor’s history in the world. Make your mark.” If you don’t like the sound of this, the old permed mode is still an option.
I haven’t played much of The Long Dark. It was for me The Short Dark in that I struggled to get past the first nest. Maybe I’ll get better with the help of the next friendly player? Or maybe I’m going to end up punching them in the stomach?
