Leaked power specs for Nvidia’s RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs claim up to a 27% power increase over the last generation, though it’s still lower than initially expected, thanks Copytekimi and hongxing2020 In X. We are not sure if these numbers correspond to TGP or TDP. However, the numbers still offer a glimpse of what to expect from Nvidia’s next generation of Blackwell GPUs; Which Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang will allegedly announce during his conference January 6 Keynote.
A few months ago, Preliminary details It is suggested that the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 will consume upwards of 400W and 600W of power respectively. The power rating appears to have declined, at least somewhat. However, these numbers show a significant increase compared to the last generation (Ada) and the previous generation (Ampere).
On a generation-to-generation basis, the RTX 5090 is said to draw 27% more power than its predecessor. This delta increases to 64% if we scale our comparison with Ampere’s RTX 3090. Likewise, the RTX 5080 sees a 12.5% jump in power consumption versus the RTX 4080 and RTX 3080.
GPU | TDP |
---|---|
RTX 5090 (rumored) | 575W |
RTX 5080 (rumored) | 360W |
RTX 4090 | 450 watts |
RTX 4080 | 320W |
RTX 3090 | 350W |
RTX 3080 | 320W |
For now, it’s expected to feature Nvidia’s flagship RTX 5090 GB202-300-A1 has 21,760 CUDA cores (170 SMs) and 32GB GDDR7 memory over a 512-bit interface. Its RTX 5080 sibling is rumored to offer 10,752 CUDA cores (84 SMs) on a GB203-400-A1 chip, and 16GB of GDDR7 memory in 30 Gbps speeds, and 256-bit memory bus.
Blackwell for data centers is built using TSMC’s 5nm-class custom node (4NP), which is said to be an improved version of the 4N seen on Ada Lovelace and not a full node jump. This likely explains why Nvidia is pushing the power limits to extract every last drop of performance. However, 4NP offers approximately 30% higher density than 4N but we will leave the exact transistor density details to Nvidia.
Blackwell is Rumor Debuting with the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, and RTX 5070 series, citing a leak from Zotac. It’s very likely that pricing and performance will be detailed by Jensen in Nvidia’s upcoming keynote in a few days.
