Ken Levin hypes up new Judas game while calling BioShock “essentially arcade from a development standpoint”

Ghost story games President Ken Levin revealed his new game Judah It differs from previous offerings BioShock and BioShock Infinite, which he described as “basically an arcade” with different trigger points that start new story beats.

Here’s what he said while chatting with GamesIndustry.biz:

BioShock and BioShock Infinite, if you look at them from a development standpoint – and this may be a little off-putting to some readers – but they are essentially arcade. A very long corridor with a bunch of action points that make story elements happen. Judas is made in a very, very different way, which makes it more reflective of the will of the players, but also much more difficult.

Levin described how Judah would be “watching the players” and would then react to different things that were happening. “Even just characters observing and commenting on a long range of player actions. Hey, I saw this and I did that, and then I did this and it was interesting because that caused that – we do that kind of thing now.”

The creator of BioShock described the process as requiring an enormous amount of work because you have to think of all the things the player can do and then write different characters’ personal response to those actions in a way that feels natural.

A release date for Judas has not yet been set, though the game has been revealed for early 2023 Targeting release by the end of March 2025. This seems a bit unlikely at this point, but back in January Ghost Story Games has confirmed that Judas is still on track for release sometime this year.
