Gar-type is a free Garfield fan game shooter.

The last time I read an actual Garfield comic was in In 1998 I think. Memoirs of Gorfield. For the blissfully uninitiated, Gorefield is Jim Davis’ version of the idiosyncratic, lasagna-loving house cat who breaks his comic ties and is a space abomination. Manifestations of Gorefield are numerous: Centurion Gorefield, Arachnid Gorefields, Gorefield reaching out for fleshless snake necks to the terrifying John Arbuckle, seeking to feed on a voice-like voice. nothing Like Bill Murray, a voice as deep and gentle as the eternal Monday before the Big Bang.

With Gar-type, a free Gorefield fan game from YouTube and pixel artist LumpyTouch, Garfield has become a planet. The good news is, unlike many other gore-variables, this Gorefield is bulletproof. It falls to Agent pilot John Starbuckle and his prototype starfighter Gar-Type D to save Earth from lasagnehilation.

Watch it on YouTube

You can help Starbuckle dash by moving your mouse around and clicking the buttons as the screen scrolls to the right. There’s a great charging teleport attack that I rarely manage to aim effectively, though this game is so obvious that your real house cat can probably finish it in one sitting. Make sure you time your power-ups, they’re on the move, and there’s nothing worse than having some extra health refills when you need some ricocheting spaghetti beams.

Garfield nostalgia aside, this is a great fan production, with art and sound effects from Lumpy, programming from qkjosh, music from MelonadeM with contributions from stevedoesmusic, and a 3D Star Wars model from Wickmer. The images are Lovecraftian purple and the soundtrack is mildly synaesthesia-inducing and the chipotle is a special level that makes you imagine the smell of Red Bull.

I love it when developers pour their heart and soul into the production values of a video game concept that goes beyond a 6/10 title quote. He shouldn’t be cracking wise about Gorefield. He sees everything. He’s looking at the top of your head right now. He thinks the top of your head looks like a lasagna bowl.

You can play Garfield. Here in the browser. If the above has made you salivate after the co-horror, I suggest you read Nate’s (RPS in peace) review immediately. Garfield Kart Fury Racing.
