Now announced at the annual Winter Geoff Awards, Elden Ring: Nightrain is a multiplayer spin-off that pits a trio of Elden Ringers against waves of enemies in a world that changes every time you play. Released in 2025. Here is the trailer.
According to a press release by publishers Bandi Namco, Nightrain will take place in a parallel version of the Elden Ring universe. Players can choose from eight characters, each with different abilities, and the objective is to survive three nights in Limveld while fending off both regular enemies and bosses. Inevitably, the map slows down at night. Failed runs earn you artifacts that can be used to customize and upgrade characters to avoid dying horribly in the future.
The press release notes that Nightreign is a “compressed action RPG unlike any experience FromSoftware has created before” where the map and enemies change between runs. “Defeating the bigger enemies and getting into the more dangerous parts of the map will reveal more powerful weapons and higher rune rewards,” he continues. “Find grace stations to give each hero a chance to level up and gain critical power.”
From a moment-to-moment perspective, it feels faster and more acrobatic than Elden Ring, with characters scaling walls like ninjas and taking to the air with the help of summonable bird creatures. The trailer features several bosses, including a few you may recognize from other FromSoftware games.
The “condensed action RPG” bit is consistent with Miyazaki’s comments at Elden Ring earlier this year. It represents the maximum limit for the project scale In software, and that small games can be “next level”. You can read more about Nightreign at Steam.
