FF14 composer Soken debuts a surprising new song, featuring the series’ icon

Video games and professional wrestling have a long and storied history. WWF No Mercy and SmackDown Shut Your Mouth are two of the best wrestling games out there, and I don’t think they’ve been topped in the last two decades. There have been plenty of ways for us to enter the virtual squared circle over the years, but that’s not where the relationship ends. Plenty of professional wrestlers have shown their love for video games when they step into the ring, and this latest offering draws from many legends, especially from Final Fantasy 14In amazing ways.

At Wrestle Dynasty on Sunday, January 5, Kenny Omega returned to Japan. The AEW and New Japan show saw Omega return after a long injury layoff, and he celebrated the moment with his entrance. Omega has been known to show his love for video games in and around the ring, but this time he brought some surprising connections to one of the… Best MMO games around, Final Fantasy 14.

“Before I return tomorrow, I want to announce that I will be debuting a new entrance at the Tokyo Dome,” Kenny Omega wrote on Twitter/X. “A new song written by the amazing Final Fantasy 14 & 16 composer Masayoshi Soken, with vocals by Jason Miller and special vocals by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu. I hope you enjoy.”

As a huge fan of the works of Omega, Soken, and Uematsu, this crossover really blew my mind. Omega’s entry wasn’t filled with Final Fantasy references, but it’s clear that he respects the work of people like Soken and Uematsu so much that he wants them to be a part of his grand comeback. With the Dawntrail raid series based on professional wrestling, everything became very fast-paced.

Omega’s love of video games has carried over into his wrestling career on several occasions, with some overt references made during appearances. Omega has He entered the AEW ring dressed as Sans from Undertale (With Megolovania in tow), and even She entered the New Japan episode dressed as Sephiroth also.

In fact, two of Omega’s in-ring moves are direct references to the video games. His finishes on V-Trigger and One Winged Angel are named after Street Fighter and Final Fantasy 7 respectively, so he’ll do whatever it takes to bring the games into the match.

Final Fantasy 14 Kenny Omega

Masayoshi Soken has been a mainstay in Final Fantasy soundtracks for over a decade at this point, with all of 14, along with their numerous expansions, and 16 as part of his library. I’ve been loving Soken’s recent work on Dawntrail, but a lot of 16’s music completely surprised me because of how easily it came to mind.

Just like Soken, Nobuo Uematsu is an old legend in the Final Fantasy community for his work as the series’ original composer. Some of his most famous works include the original Final Fantasy 7 and 8, and he even returned for FF7 Rebirth to compose the game’s main theme.

Jason Miller is the founder of the rock band Godhead, but they also have major ties to video games, especially Final Fantasy 14. Not only did Miller voice the original version of Raubahn in FF14, but he also served as the lead singer for many of the themes and trailers in the expansions Shadowbringers and Endwalker.
