However, if you’re a new member who came to the site only to find all these different numbers listed on your profile, achievements, and games, read on for an explanation of what on earth is going on out there.
Below, we’ll explain why and how the TrueAchievement score was invented, how it works, what the TA ratio is, and how to discover and understand it throughout the site.
We thought we’d take the time, while everyone is at home, to review and republish some of our site’s help articles. If you’re new to TrueAchievements or want a refresher; This article explains the TrueAchievement scoring system, with examples, to help you understand and learn about one of our most important features.
When comparing Gamerscore with some friends near the Xbox 360 release, we came to the conclusion that as great as the achievement system is, the way points are awarded isn’t always fair. For example, 5 Gamerscore was given to Press the start button in Simpsons game It is worth the same value as the 5 Gamerscore given to it Complete the game using only the Lunar Staff in Ninja Gaiden S2.
With the maximum Gamerscore per game capped at 1,000 points (and we realize there are exceptions, as XBLA titles have been capped at 200 and 400 points in the past), the issue becomes more apparent. For example, you get 1000GS for pressing the B button 50 times Avatar: The Last Airbender – Scorched Earth Worth exactly the same as the 1000GS unlocked for completing a game like Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rockwhich will require some skill and dedication to master.
That didn’t seem right, so we decided to see if we could come up with a better system — one that still respected the Gamerscore value the developers chose to give each achievement, but more accurately displayed the rarity of the achievement.
At TrueAchievements, we believe that the harder an achievement is to achieve, the more points and fame you should get when you unlock it. To this end, we have come up with a formula that adjusts these achievement scores according to their rarity.
The rarity of any given achievement is determined by Compare the number of people who unlocked the achievement to the number of people who played the game in question.
The smaller the percentage of people who achieve the achievement, the higher the multiplier for that achievement (this multiplier is known as Actual completion rate).
The above formula is used to calculate the TA ratio for the game’s basic list of achievements. We use different formulas to calculate TA percentages for achievements in DLC packs and title updates which we will cover in a future help story for the site.
In this example of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfarewe can see that 78,068 TA players have unlocked Mile High Club completion outside 418,153 who played the game. This is a very low percentage (18%), which indicates that it is somewhat difficult to unlock and, therefore, the TA ratio is very high (2.31).
Then we take the basic Gamerscore value for the achievement (20) and multiply it by the TA ratio (2.31) to give us a Actual achievement score 46which seems more fair.
Because the TrueAchievement score is based on the number of people who have currently unlocked an achievement compared to the number of people who have played the game (we count unlocking at least one achievement in a game as having played it), the TA score for an achievement can increase or decrease over time, as it is tracked. More people as they own the game, or more people who own the game unlock the achievement.
And it’s that simple!
Adding all the TA scores for each achievement in a game gives you the total TrueAchievement score for that game. Use Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare As an example again, you can see that his TrueAchievement score is 1,488.
Add up all the TrueAchievement scores for the achievements the player has unlocked and you get their TrueAchievement score. In the example below, you can see that Smirnov Earned a TrueAchievement score 6,308,506 At the time of writing.
