Dune: Awakening It hasn’t been released yet – in fact, even when it does, it won’t be available on consoles for some time – but it’s in closed beta for those lucky and keen enough to get their hands on Arrakis as soon as possible.
So, although there are still a lot of unanswered questions about the game, and a lot of tools and retooling in the beta period, we do have some metrics that point to a key point about the gameplay.
According to A Blog post From the developer Funcom To close out 2024, Death Scales shows those in closed beta that Funcom has nailed the reality of a planet like Arrakis, and that reality is that everything around you is trying to kill you.
First, everyone has to survive for themselves in Arrakis, and it shows 58% of player deaths coming from NPCs on the planet. Secondly, and unsurprisingly, it is the sandworms that take a large portion of players with them 27% Among the deaths of players are the sacrifices of Shai Kholoud.
And third, it’s the drought that takes away something else 22%a death that players tried to avoid by draining the blood of the desert rat that Paul Atreides called himself Muddeeb. According to the post, the blood of approximately “a hundred Ma’adibs” was extracted, and Funcom said: “How could you do that?”
Finally, it is also clear that if you are really inclined to survive in Arrakis, it is possible to survive, as “2% Of players who have played at least 10 hours have never died in the game…until now!”
All of this together speaks to the fact that Funcom has gotten Arrakis right. Players are dying to the planet’s deadly atmosphere and the culture of survival it breeds, and will do whatever it takes to try to survive. An achievable but difficult feat.
Of course, this game is still in beta, and will likely change quite a bit between now and launch PS5 and PS5 Pro, But hopefully the lethality of Arrakis remains intact.
If you can’t wait for the console to launch, you can apply for the beta through this beta profile survey on the Dune: Awakening website.
