James Gunn has spoken about the DC Universe’s Batman following the superhero’s full-length cameo in a recent episode of the animated series. Creature commands.
Be careful! Spoilers for Creature Commandos Episode 6 follow.
Episode 6 of the DCU kickstarter Creature Commandos sees Batman standing on a rooftop watching crime boss Dr. Phosphorus. The footage shows a mega-stacked Caped Crusader in his iconic costume, but there’s little else recognizable about Gunn’s superhero.
Based on comments submitted by Gunn Rotten Tomatoes TV After the release of episode 6, it’s easy to see why this brief look at Batman is so generic. Gunn said he asked for “more silhouette” in the show after the original Batman was more detailed than he was willing to commit to at this stage.
“When I was first given it we saw a lot more Batman and I was like, ‘I’m not ready to commit to that, I’m not ready to commit to that, I’m not ready to commit to that!’ ” said Gunn. “So I said, ‘More silhouettes!’ More silhouettes! More silhouettes!’ “
What this glimpse of Batman offers fans, Gunn explained, is that Batman doesn’t just exist within the DCU in Creature Commandos and the events we’re seeing. this year’s Superman moviebut that it is known within the universe.
“I think it’s a great way to show that Batman exists,” Gunn said. “He already exists in this universe just like when we get to the Superman movie we see that Superman already exists. The people of Metropolis already know him. We don’t need to hear the origin story again.
“So, yeah, that’s just a way of introducing that Batman is a part of this universe, he’s an important part of this universe, and he has an impact on it, including defeating dangerous, scary people like Phosphorus, which is pretty tough.”
Gunn then made an interesting comment suggesting that the DCU Batman will merge with Superman at some point.
“This is DCU Batman,” he said. “Listen, I have to tell you, I love Batman. I love him. I’ve loved him since I was a kid. He’s one of my favorite characters. I went on record when I was at Marvel in the past saying that my favorite character is Batman. I love him and we’re going to do great things with him. The superhero of the world he’s the most popular and I can’t wait for people to see more of him, with Superman, and together.”
The question is, at what point will we see the DCU Batman properly revealed? Fans will have to wait Batman: The Brave and the Bold moviewith no release window, or could Batman make a surprise appearance in another project before then? It could be a while before we find out, considering the DCU’s Batman still remains uncast.
It’s worth noting that the DCU Batman is not the same Batman we see in Matt Reeves’ 2022 The Batman, played by Robert Pattinson. The sequel The Batman 2 was recently pushed back a year and will now open in theaters on October 1, 2027, as part of the separate. Batman Epic Crime Saga.
