Dan Forden, original lead member Mortal Kombat The team behind the sound design and music for the legendary fighting game series Midway has retired after 37 years.
Forden, who long-time fans will likely remember as the guy who shouts “Pleasantly warm!” He appears briefly from the side of the screen after the player lands a capital character occasionally, and has worked on every major installment in the franchise up to Mortal Kombat 1, where he served as a voice director.

Speaking in a statement, Forden commented:
We’ve made a lot of fun things over the years. I’m really proud of what we accomplished as well as how much fun we had making these things. There are a lot of smart, talented people (at NetherRealm) – look for more great things to come over the next several years. I wouldn’t have lasted 37 years in this industry if the fans weren’t out there playing the games we made. Thank you all for supporting what we do. Live long and… delicious!
Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, added:
After an incredible 37-year career, on October 1st, Dan Forden (one-fourth of the original Mortal Kombat team) began his well-earned retirement. I cannot overstate the impact Dan has had on pinball, video games, NetherRealm and especially Mortal Kombat.
A large part of the first Mortal Kombat’s identity lay in its tone, mystery, and outrageous presentation. Do you remember the first time you saw and heard a big sound? Explosive effect. The announcer’s evil laugh. “DUN DUN DUN” before death? Do you remember the wonderful music that marked the atmosphere of the battlefields? That was all Dan.
Looking ahead to the series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will be coming to PS5, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series Alternate versions of the game (for example, the original Mortal Kombat is represented here with the arcade, Mega Drive, SNES, Game Boy and Game Gear versions).
