the principal of Black Myth: Wukong Developer Game Science has pointed to the Xbox Series S as there is no Xbox version of the game.
In a post on a Chinese social media website WeiboGame Science founder and CEO Feng Ji won PC and PlayStation 5 action game Black Myth: Wukong’s Game of the Year at the 2024 Steam Awards, lamenting the lack of an Xbox version of the game, which he blamed. Optimization issues with Xbox Series S.
“The only thing missing is the Xbox,” he said, according to the machine learning translation, “which seems a bit wrong to us, but that 10 GB of shared memory – without years of optimization experience – is really hard to work with.”
That’s a reference to the power of the Xbox Series S compared to the Xbox Series X. The Series S has 4TF of GPU compute compared to the Xbox Series X’s 12.2TF, but the killer is the drop in memory allocation, from 16GB to 10GB.
Microsoft’s Xbox release policy means that publishers and developers must release their games on the Xbox Series X and Sn. They can’t release games exclusively for the Xbox Series X, for example. This has caused difficulties for some studios in the past, perhaps most notably Baldur’s Gate 3 Larian developer. Baldur’s Gate 3 was originally released only on PC and PS5, the Xbox version was delayed due to the Xbox Series S having difficulties with split-screen co-op. In the past, Xbox has committed to parity between the Xbox Series S and X for all games, but that after all, Baldur’s Gate 3 made an exception so the game could launch later in 2023.
In 2023, Thomas Puha Remedy communications director spoke openly about the challenge the studio faced in getting Alan Wake 2 to run well on the Xbox Series Ssaying that the console’s GPU is “a problem” and that “less memory is a pretty big problem.” A VFX artist who previously worked on an Xbox Series X and S game said in a now-deleted tweet that “many developers have been sitting in meetings over the last year trying to get the Series S launch requirements removed.”
“Studios have gone through a development cycle where the Series S became an albatross around the production neck, and now with new consoles firmly in development, teams don’t want to repeat the process,” said the developer. .
Including press interviews IGNXbox boss Phil Spencer has deflected questions about whether the Xbox Series S is holding back developers and rejected calls to allow developers to release their games only on the Xbox Series X. in an interview EurogamerSpencer said, “Having an entry-level price point for a sub-$300 console is a good thing for the industry. I think it’s important. The Switch has been able to do that, in terms of the traditional plug-in-my-TV kind of thing. I think it’s important. So , we are committed.
Black Myth: Wukong’s situation, however, is further complicated by the fact that Microsoft’s delay of the game on Xbox has nothing to do with development issues. In several statements issued to IGN, Microsoft has suggested an exclusivity deal with Sony was the cause of the delay.
“As we’ve said before, we’re excited to launch Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X and Sn and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms,” Microsoft told IGN.
“We would prefer not to comment on our partners’ agreements with other platform holders, but we can confirm that the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised with us.”
Black Myth: Wukong released on August 19th and sold 18 million copies in two weeks on PC and PS5, earning over $700 million in revenue in the process. That was enough to put Black Myth: Wukong alongside Grand Theft Auto 5 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as one of the best-selling games of all time, and it’s an amazing return for a game that announced its budget. $70 million over six years of development. He did so well Sony noted that Black Myth: Wukong is a major revenue contributor in his last quarter, to make up for the disaster at Concord.
DLC is set to follow. In September, investor Game Science confirmed plans for Hero Games Black Myth: Wukong’s Elden Ring-style expansion to release ahead of any sequel.
from IGN Black Myth: Wukong review It returned an 8/10. We said: “Despite some frustrating technical issues, Black Myth: Wukong is a great action game with fantastic battles, exciting bosses, intriguing secrets and a beautiful world.”
