The Bloody Baron is the first important subquest you can encounter in Velen, the first area of which The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Main quest. Although you may deal with it before or after the “Hunting a Witch” quest, I recommend you take the Baron’s story first.
The titular man may immediately strike you as a typical drunken assaulter who deserves nothing – as he did to me – but don’t let the game fool you. Despite his many flaws, the Bloody Baron is a surprisingly deep character with complexities that demand your attention if you want to experience the full emotional range of this story. The Bloody Baron missions are some of the best and scariest missions you’ll encounter in the base game.
The Bloody Baron’s quest can only end in one of two ways. Once you complete this task, it may trigger a knee-jerk reaction to reload your save file and begin your desperate search for a happier outcome – although there is no such thing in this story. Yes, this quest only has two real endings, each of which is grim in its own way. I’m here to save you the psychological hassle of working tirelessly to find an outcome that doesn’t exist in the Bloody Baron quest and get you to the outcome that does exist.
Most different results on Witcher 3 The result of decisions players know they are making, but that is not the case here. We’re making decisions that will impact the Bloody Baron quest before we even start it, so let’s take a look at what you need to get through it in the best way possible.
The Bloody Baron quest begins in Crow perchedbut he will secretly remember an important decision from Nilfgaardian connectiona previous endeavor. Having previously been aggressive with the Baron’s men will prompt you to go on a fetch quest before starting the quest itself, while deciding to be nice to the guards will take you straight to the Baron. Feel free to do battle with the guards if you wish. This won’t affect the outcome, but it will make players jump through more hoops than necessary to complete the Bloody Baron quest, so I recommend going the peaceful route.
As I mentioned earlier, the ending in which the supposedly evil Baron meets his demise might seem like the best, but things aren’t that simple.
To get this ending, you must release the evil spirit that asks for Geralt’s help in living Hellock whispered Strive. This may not immediately seem like something directly related to the Baron’s fate, but it is. Releasing the spirit will curse Anna, the Baron’s beloved wife. The game will give players many options to lift the curse, but they all lead to the same outcome. Geralt will end up lifting the curse, but Anna will always die as a result. This then leads to the Baron’s death as well.
Another way to get this ending is to complete Return to Cropac Swamp Striving before Hellock whispered.
While you try to avoid as many spoilers as possible, move on Return to Cropac Swamp It will set in motion a chain of events that will lead to Anna’s death, followed by the death of the Baron.
If you complete Whispering Hill However, you will eventually meet an evil spirit trapped inside a tree. This spirit will ask Geralt for help, and he can either free it or destroy it. For this ending, you will need to destroy the spirit. Then get up Return to Cropac Swamp The mission will have Geralt saving Anna from the swamp companions.
Killing the spirit triggers a chain of events that culminate in Anna losing her mind. This doesn’t sound ideal, but it also allows for her to be rescued, as well as for the start of a somewhat cathartic subplot. Saving Anna will prompt the Baron to move forward with some kind of redemption.
Spoilers in the paragraph below:
The Baron will take it upon himself to take Anna to the Blue Mountains in hopes of ridding her of her illness. The game never shows the outcome of Baron’s last known actions, but this ending at least leaves players somewhat hopeful.
While the aforementioned two endings were all you knew about the Baron’s final days for a few years, 2017 saw CD Projekt Red release a video celebrating the tenth year of the series that should provide a much welcome additional insight.
Although you can’t unlock this cinematic in the game, it feels like the happy ending you’ll get after making the best choices in the game. It’s a very touching video that shows the Baron at a party with Geralt, Ciri and all their friends. From that, we can assume that Anna is alive, and from the smile on the Baron’s face, that she has recovered. It’s up to you to accept this video as canon or not, but why wouldn’t you?

And before you go, there is another important thing to remember for Gwent completionists which is important to mention despite its weakness. You must challenge the Baron once you meet him, as the end result of the quest will make him unavailable for further card games.
