What were you doing in 2016? I was in my second year of university, diligently writing articles about witches in Scotland and drinking a lot of bad coffee. But elsewhere in 2016, Amistech Games was released My summer car In Early Access, a vehicle building sim with constant evolution. With a website that harkens back to the ’90s and a nostalgic vibe that I’m absolutely obsessed with, after a decade of early access, version 1.0 is finally here, and the game has skyrocketed up the Steam charts as a result.
If you are not familiar with My summer carit is actually a hardcore car building Simulation game. The game is set in 1990s Finland, where you are presented with a large number of random parts that you will have to assemble into a working vehicle. You can then use this innovation to take up odd jobs and attend “various Finnish rural activities,” which Amistech notes all boil down to “doing stupid things under the influence of alcohol.”
The car you build is completely up to you. Create yourself a speed demon to compete in rallies and races for cash, or simply fix it up and start your day as normal. Either way, you’ll need to make sure it passes all the relevant safety checks, otherwise the police will take you and your cool new mechanic buddy to jail – imagine all that hard work gone to waste.
However, My Summer Car isn’t just about building; There are some Survival game Mechanics have been thrown into the mix as well. You’ll have to stay fit and healthy (Amistech recommends “hot dogs, beer, and sleep,” which honestly sounds like a dream), and if your car accidentally explodes, you’ll die as a result. Yes, My Summer Car features a permadeath system, which raises the stakes and forces you to be precise in your craft. One wrong gear, one wrong turn of the wrench, and everything is fine.
And people absolutely love it. In the wake of version 1.0, My Summer Car soared up the Steam charts, with 3,605 players delving into the chaos, helping it reach the coveted “trending game” status. 94% of all Lifetime reviews have been positive, with recent reviews scoring at 95%, putting My Summer Car somewhere between ‘very positive’ and ‘extremely positive’.
My Summer Car Version 1.0 is now at 18% off, down to $12.29 / £9.01 until Wednesday 15 January. You can pick it up here If you want to build some cars and drink a lot of beer.
