Patch 25.S1.1 has arrived (yeah, we don’t know why it’s patch 25 like the year instead of 15), so let’s break down everything you need to know before queuing up again.

A new epic monster, the Atakhan Bringer of Ruin, hits the Rift in two unique forms, Nexus Towers can now respawn, there’s a new Noxus-inspired Rift, new boots linked to the bounty system, and of course the usual hero tweaks every new patch.

League of Legends patch notes 25.S1.1

Atakhan, the bringer of ruin, strikes the rift

Atakhan becomes the third Epic monster introduced to Summoners Rift, appearing between Rift Herald and Baron at the 20-minute mark. Atakhan was brought in to help influence some of the game situations in league matches through his two different appearances. How and where Atakhan will appear depends on how bloody the game is early on. At minute 14, two distinct walls will form in the top or bottom lane, depending on which one saw more damage and kills for the hero.

Additionally, the amount of damage and kills inflicted on the hero will also affect which version of Atakhan will appear at the 20-minute mark. The slower-paced early game means players will battle Voracious Atakhan, who, when killed, grants the team that ensured his death a permanent 40 gold boost to any hero removal permanently until the end of matches. Furthermore, Voracious Atakhan grants all five players who defeat him a one-time Pseudo-Guardian Angel revival for 150 seconds. If a player with this buff takes lethal damage, they will enter a stasis state for 2 seconds before returning to the fountain at full health. An enemy player who defeats said player will only receive 100 gold compared to the 300 gold players get in a traditional takedown.

On the other hand, if the game is full of kills and damage to heroes, Ruinous Atakhan will appear. Ruinous Atakhan is a little simpler when it comes to the boosts given to the team that kills the monster. When Ruinous Atakhan is eliminated, the party receives a 25 percent increase to all gains from Epic monsters in the game permanently, including those Epic monsters already slain. This is a boost to the stats of legendary monsters, and is especially effective for dragon bounties.

The destroyed Atakhan also drops a wave of petals from a new plant, the Blood Rose. Blood Rose Petals are another permanent item that grants the player a 25 percent boost in experience depending on their K/D/A and adaptive power. These gains are permanent and cannot be removed, incentivizing players to grab as many of them as possible to deprive enemy players of these gains.

Feats of Strength: New boots, new rewards

In keeping with the Nexus takeover theme, a new boot option in League of Legends comes with a twist on some of the important milestones in each LoL game. All level 1 and 2 boot skins remain the same, but can now receive powerful upgrades that are only awarded to the team that achieves specific in-game objectives first. Players will no longer be awarded additional gold for First Blood and First Tower, as this will be directly linked to the Boot Upgrade system.

Teams will compete to achieve two of the three milestones first to unlock special upgrades for any Tier 2 shoes purchased during the game. The three objectives are First Blood, First Tower, and the new addition, Monster Slay, which is awarded to any team that kills three legendary monsters first. Once a team has earned two of the three, their boots will be upgraded, providing varying levels of stat bonuses centered around the class of the boots (Berserk Barriers provide additional attack speed, Plated Steel Caps provide additional armor, etc.).

This goes even further, as obtaining these special boots through the Feats of Strength quest also unlocks third-level boots that can be purchased for even more additional stats later in the game. The player must have completed two legendary items to purchase tier three upgrades and gain more of the late-game statistical power meter. This should force players to focus on these three new quests, and the boot system has been completely revamped with all new starting arts, names, and stat bonuses to check out.

Nexus Towers are now reappearing

To make matches longer, Riot Games has introduced new towers. This one is fairly straightforward. Similar to inhibitors, nexus towers will respawn three minutes after being destroyed at full health, and will be as good as new. Losing your association towers has always been the “nail in the coffin” of league play, as it was common to leave your association exposed, making the game much easier for the enemy team to win. Now, if you stall long enough, your last line of defense will come back to life to give teams a better fighting chance when playing from the back.

Teleportation changes, and new starting arts for all summoner spells

Riot has explained that this patch aims to prolong games by adding better respawn mechanics and slowing down the early phase of each match. There is no change more consistent with this logic than the modifications made to the summoner’s spell Teleport. Teleport is the most popular summoning spell in the game after Flash and will now interact in some new and old ways.

The larger of the two mods is teleported in its base form, as it will now no longer function as a flash immediately after the cast time. Heroes will enter a stasis state and slide through the rift to their destination, taking four to eight seconds, depending on distance, to reach base form, and always four seconds in the later familiar form of the Unleashed Teleport. To compensate for the removal of the flashing teleport, Riot has reduced the ability’s cast time by a second and boosted the movement speed time outside of the teleport by an additional second.

Minion waves and regular tower changes

Continuing Riot’s theme of slowing down early play in League, both minions and towers in general have been tweaked to reflect this new concept. Starting with everyone’s favorite gold farms, minions will now deal more overall damage specifically to each other, reducing the ability to stack large waves crashing into towers and slowing down the ability to capture towers early in the game in general. To counter this, in the later stages of the match, minions across the board will gain more health later and stop scaling attack damage much earlier than previous patches, allowing for more powerful pushes to win matches later in the match.

On the tower side, Riot has adjusted the tower’s damage while shooting enemy heroes. The thermal damage amplifier for each stack or turret shot taken by an enemy hero has been increased while also increasing the boost time from three to five seconds. This would deter a lot of tower diving, which would promote a slower early stage. To mitigate some of the tower power, Riot has reduced the additional resistance of top- and mid-lane top-tier 1 towers from 85 to 50 percent, allowing solo lane players to farm boards much easier now that diving has become more complex.

Hero Changes: Access the early game power of ADC

With so many significant changes to the map and gameplay in this patch, there won’t be a lot of tweaks to the heroes in 25.S1.1 unless you’re a sniper player. All four heroes targeted in this patch carry AD, with the reason being the same theme of early game slowdowns. Ashe, Kalista, Twitch, and Varus have all received changes that appear to be nerfs early in the game, but provide additional stats moving into later stages.

Take Ashe, who had the overall damage of her W hit ability significantly weakened early on. However, the ability is becoming more difficult now. Along with enhances their passive ability. Frost Shot’s crit for slow heroes, and the additional Q Rangers Focus damage and attack speed, make Ashe more powerful as a mid-game marksman.

Calista’s changes go in the same vein. Her classic early game combo of throwing a Q, Pierce, at Rend from the Spear pile, has been nerfed in both her base attack damage and AD bonus on her rent. This should reduce Calista’s power on the path in the first few levels. To combat this in the mid-to-late game, Riot has boosted the attack damage percentages on both of the above abilities while also giving them a slower decline in their passive jump ability to allow for better flying in team fights.

Varus is the last hero to receive modifications in the context of his power being stunted at the start of the game. His overall base mana has been reduced by 40 from 360 to 320, while both of his poke tools, Piercing Arrow, have significant damage reductions across the board, and his Hail of Arrows mana cost has increased by ten. Varus’ famous prick with deadly items may no longer be viable with these drastic changes.

Finally, Twitch got the smallest tweak ever, simply buffing the slow behind his poison barrel, allowing for more stacking on his passive and more user-placed auto attacks.

Noxian Summoners Rift and new skins

In conclusion, let’s talk about everything related to cosmetics. First, Summoners Rift got a Noxian facelift. The turrets now have a more military appearance, resembling the machine to laser-guided missiles. The minions now look as if they emerged from Immortal Bastion ready for war. Even the shop owners are ready for Noxian’s masquerade party to debut new masks for the event. These changes won’t change the gameplay at all but will continue Noxus’ red-heavy theme.
