Deus Ex writer reveals canceled sequel linking Mankind Divided to DX1

Marc Cecere has worked as a writer on both The Human Revolution and Mankind Divided. Speaking to the From Script To Life podcast series, Cecere explains that the canceled sequel would have taken place in Rabia, a city that was hinted at in August 2016. “He can never catch up with the Illuminati,” Cecere explains. “We know this. We know that the Illuminati will last until the year 2050. So, what could happen? That was the question we were trying to answer at one point. Cecere also agrees that the ending of Mankind Divided, as it stands, is less than ideal.

“We had to cut the game a lot due to studio and financing issues. I agree with a lot of the criticism, especially when it comes to that ending and this kind of meaningless suspense. Nothing is resolved.”

As for the new Deus Ex game, Cecere says that the majority of developers who worked on Human Revolution and Mankind Divided have already left Eidos. Given that Embracer announced in 2024 that a Deus Ex game in development had been shelved, it seems unlikely that a new project would be currently in the works.

“I can’t guarantee that they’re not working on it, but I’m pretty sure if they made that decision (to stop the series) they would probably be working on other things right now, even though all the work that’s been done is just sitting there,” Cecere says.
