Deus Ex writer reveals canceled sequel linking Mankind Divided to DX1

There are a lot of contenders – Command and Conquer, Fallout, Doom – but overall, I’m pretty sure the original Ex-deity It is the greatest computer game of all time. However, unfortunately, the prequels to Deus Ex, Human Revolution and Mankind Divided were unable to catch up to the plot of DX1 – as of 2024, series owner Embracer appears to have shelved Deus Ex, after laying off nearly 100 employees at developer Eidos. But this is not the end of the story. One of the Deus Ex writers, whose credits also include Watch Dogs Legion, is now sharing details about the Mankind Divided sequel that didn’t exist before.

It was released in 2016, The former God of humanity is divided It ends on a near cliffhanger. Despite defeating the terrorist Marchenko, our hero Adam Jensen fails to capture Bob Page and Joseph Manderley, two prominent members of the powerful Illuminati. The Illuminati themselves pledge to spy on Jensen in the hopes that he will lead them to Janus, a shadowy figure who wants to bring down the organization. that RPGGhost, and FPS gameMechanically, Mankind Divided has a lot in common with its predecessor dating back to 2000. A sequel could have finally tied the two games together.

Marc Cecere has worked as a writer on both The Human Revolution and Mankind Divided. Speaking to the From Script To Life podcast series, Cecere explains that the canceled sequel would have taken place in Rabia, a city that was hinted at in August 2016. However, given the group’s prominent role in the original Deus Ex, Jensen wouldn’t have completely wiped out the Illuminati.

“He can never catch up with the Illuminati,” Cecere explains. “We know this. We know that the Illuminati will last until the year 2050. So, what could happen? That was the question we were trying to answer at one point. We had one name we could throw away, and that was the name that Jensen was going to attach.” But by doing this, Jensen causes Deus Ex and that’s the tragedy of Jensen, is that he causes what happens next – he causes Bob Page to become Bob Page.

Although he could have been the star of the canceled sequel, during the development of Mankind Divided, there were questions about bringing back Jensen at all – after the end of the Human Revolution, when the Panacea base was flooded and destroyed, Deus Ex writers considered that Jensen’s story might have been Already told.

“‘Humanity Divided’ was not intended to be a Jensen story,” Cecere continues. “It became Jensen’s story after a while when they decided to do a second story, but Jensen’s story was supposed to end, like, ‘Okay, we’ll move on to Deus Ex: Somebody Else.'” But because Jensen was so popular, we said, “Bring him back from Among the dead.”

Cecere also agrees that the ending of Mankind Divided, as it stands, is less than ideal.

“We had to cut the game a lot due to studio and financing issues. I agree with a lot of the criticism, especially when it comes to that ending and this kind of meaningless suspense. Nothing is resolved.”

As for the new Deus Ex game, Cecere says that the majority of developers who worked on Human Revolution and Mankind Divided have already left Eidos. Given that Embracer announced in 2024 that a Deus Ex game in development had been shelved, it seems unlikely that a new project would be currently in the works.

“I can’t guarantee that they’re not working on it, but I’m pretty sure if they made that decision (to stop the series) they would probably be working on other things right now, even though all the work that’s been done is just sitting there,” Cecere says.
